As you can see from these images, Pony Bikes is not your typical store. Owner Sasha Strickland, who preferred not to be photographed when Bicycling Trade visited, founded the business in 2008 and has over 15 years’ experience in the bike industry.
She likes to get her hands dirty with bike restorations, custom builds and frame manufacture, although they’re still testing their own frames before making them widely available.
Pony Bikes’ new location is about 2km west of the city centre of Melbourne.

There’s a cappuccino machine one side of the store, and this table opposite under the unique wall mural.
A rare old Malvern star road racing frame takes pride of place above a sign reading, ‘Please do not touch, it’s worth more than you and your unborn kids.’ The white framed bike above is another Australian made steel bike, by legendary Sydney builder, Jim Bundy.
